JVC HR-XV1 DVD/Nicam Video Combi
Getting both DVD and video in one box makes a lot of sense: it's practical, convenient and probably most importantly, cheaper. The JVC HR-XV1 DVD/Nicam Video Combi offers a decent combination of players. While it might not look like it has just landed from outer space like some systems or, thanks to the amount packed into it, be super-slim, it's still a solid-looking player. Connectors include two SCART sockets, one wired for RGB DVD output and an S-VHS socket, again DVD only. The remote has a healthy set of buttons and set up will take a little time since you've two basically separate systems to configure. Supported formats include MP3 files and most CD formats including CD-RW and CD-R but no recordable DVD formats as yet.
This isn't a cut-down video system but has all the features you expect of a stand-alone player including Video Plus+, NICAM and auto-tracking. The Long Play mode on the video isn't as good as it could be with a slightly muddy picture--not much to worry about if you are just catching up with the soaps but annoying if you've recorded one of your favourite films for repeat viewing. DVD playback is everything we have come to expect from the format with rich, detailed and vibrant pictures. The zoom function on the DVD can be fun to play with and the variable-speed slow-motion modes are genuinely useful.
Getting DVD and video in one hit can make a lot of sense and the JVC HR-XV1 is an eminently sensible option. It's not perhaps suitable for the real home-cinema buff but offers the best of both worlds with the minimum of bother. --Miles Berkeley
